The city of Los Angeles has two major sports teams, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Clippers. The Lakers are one of the most storied franchises in all of the sports. You may know them as a basketball team with all those rings and championships, or maybe you’re more into football and remember them as a team that got into the Super Bowl by an amazing 32 points! But what you might not know is that they’re also one of the oldest professional basketball teams in America—they’ve been around since 1930! That’s right: even though Los Angeles is a huge sports town, it wasn’t always home to multiple professional teams playing at once. In fact, back when both NFL teams had offices in LA, there was only one baseball team (the Dodgers), but now we have three different ones (Angels/Giants). Let’s take a look at why this happened so often over time:

The Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers are not just basketball teams. They are also the only two teams in LA and both are owned by the same person: Jerry Buss, who died in 2013 at age 80.
Both teams play at Staples Center, which was built for both of them specifically to accommodate their needs as professional sports franchises (the Clippers moved into Staples after playing at Anaheim Arena).

You may have heard that there were two NFL teams in LA, and you may have also heard that they left. But why did the Rams leave LA? And what about the Raiders?
The answer: during the 1940s and 1950s, Los Angeles was home to both an American Football League team (the Los Angeles Dons) and a National Football League team (the Rams). While these two leagues competed against each other on Sundays, they also shared a common owner: Irv Kupcinet. In 1946, he moved both teams together into a new stadium built with public funds called Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum–the same location where today’s Rams play their home games!
But things changed when the AFL merged with NFL owners who wanted to establish themselves as legitimate threats against established teams like Green Bay Packers or New York Yankees. As part of this trend toward consolidation within professional sports leagues across America during this period known as “merger mania” – especially among baseball clubs who had already combined forces several times before – some investors felt threatened by potential outside competition so decided then sell off their franchises altogether rather than invest further resources into maintaining them.”
They both lasted less than 10 years.
The answer to this question is a bit complicated. The Rams left Los Angeles in 1994, and the Raiders left in 1982.
The Rams were the first team to leave LA, as they moved to St Louis after playing their first season in LA. They were followed by the Raiders (who would later take up residence in Oakland) who also left for another city entirely: San Diego.

LA is a big city. It’s one of the largest cities in the world and has a population of over 3 million people. This means that there are enough people in Los Angeles to support two major league franchises (or three if you want). In fact, we’ve seen some evidence that shows how popular these teams are here: last year’s Super Bowl drew an attendance record crowd of 103,500 people at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey–a stadium that seats 75,300! And if you look at recent years’ ticket sales numbers from both organizations’ websites (NFL Tickets & NBA Playoffs Tickets), it seems like there’s plenty of demand for tickets for each sport too:

So, why is there a need for two NBA teams in Los Angeles? I think the answer lies in the history of the city. The ABA was the first major professional basketball league to come to LA, and it lasted until 1974. As you may know, the Clippers joined the NBA in 1982 after having been an ABA team for a decade before that. Meanwhile, as far as NFL teams go – back when there were two of them – neither lasted more than ten years before moving back east or overseas (or both!). That’s just how things go sometimes: successful franchises move away from their home cities when they evolve into bigger cities with more attractive markets for fans; meanwhile, struggling ones get poached by other teams because their owners want to make money off selling players instead of building winning teams around them like they used to do.”
